First Grade News for week of February 17, 2025
Valentine's Day was blissful and VERY exciting for first grade! Thank you for all your expressions of love!
ELA & Reading: Why is it important to learn about our country's past? The first graders will be comparing and contrasting two texts from our reader about the making of the first American flag.
Spelling: We will use the /ou/ sound as our focus for spelling this week.
Math: Unit 9 - Place value to 40. We are using tens rods and units to build numbers. This is critical for kids to build and understand value.

Why teach sight words?
"A small set of words makes up the majority of frequently encountered words in written English. For example the 220 Dolch sight words, make up about 50% of the words in typical written English, and about 80% of the words in children’s books. Imagine how much easier a new book is to read for a child if the child already knows most of the words."
